Brief Introduction
“Contradictions of Capital and Care”, by Nancy Fraser
This paper is considered one of the leading socialist-feminist theoretical works by a contemporary scholar. It was first presented at the German Sociological Association Conference in 2016. It is about Marx and Engels’ theories about economic and social production systems/relations and the crisis of family care, women’s domestic work and raising and serving the family. It examines themes such as the role and contradictions of domestic work in capital production, the rise of production relations and the family as a result of nineteenth-century post-World War II “Fordism” (the so-called golden age of capitalism), twentieth-century state-sponsored capitalism, and current financial capitalism. and changes in family care, and critically examines the changing and increasing burden and exploitation on women. The paper is available on New Left Review’s website and a video of the Conference by DGS-Kongress 2016 is available on YouTube.
