Interview with Alia Haider

Alia Haider is the Vice President of HKP, also serving as the Secretary of Health and Women. HKP is an emerging socialist party in Pakistan that contested general elections for the first time in 2024.

How did your political journey begin?

I come from a political background. My father was a lifelong Marxist and socialist feminist, so politics was always part of our home. Influences like the Cuban revolution, Fidel Castro, and Lenin shaped my early worldview. Even as a child, I developed strong opinions about social injustices—be it patriarchy, capitalism, or imperialism.

When and how did you become affiliated with HKP?

I’ve been part of the Haqooq-e-Khalq Movement since 2018. When the idea of forming a party emerged, it was a collective decision. While we have titles like General Secretary or President, we believe in a non-hierarchical structure. I serve on the executive committee and also as Health and Women’s Secretary, and Vice President. All members are equal.

Does HKP have any international affiliations?

Yes, HKP is formally part of Progressive International. Comrades from international socialist movements, including Cuba and Nepal, have supported our efforts. During the local elections, even the Cuban ambassador visited our campaign office in Chungy. We also have ties with communist parties in India and Bangladesh.

What challenges do women face in politics?

It’s genuinely difficult for women to claim space—whether in offices, schools, or politics. There’s often an assumption that women lack decision-making abilities. Fortunately, in HKP, my comrades believe in socialist feminism, and I’ve never felt marginalized. Everyone receives credit based on their work, not gender.

How did HKM transition into HKP, and why did you enter elections?

Working in areas like Harbanspura and Chungy made us realize that real change requires entering the political system. Inspired by examples like Ali Wazir and Mohsin Dawar, we decided that participating in the system was essential to challenge it effectively. We wanted to address everyday issues—water, electricity, violence against women—from within the system.

How was the campaign experience, and what challenges did you face?

We organized from the ground up—appointing coordinators, forming youth and women leadership, and setting up local offices. Our campaign in Chungy was immersive and passionate. I spent every day there from morning till midnight. It even delayed my wedding! We launched the “Khalaq Clinic” during the campaign, offering healthcare alongside political awareness.

What was the reaction to the election results?

Our hearts broke, but we were mentally prepared. We believe we had over 15,000 votes, yet the results didn’t reflect that. PTI and PML-N had already dominated the national scene, and there was institutional resistance against us. Despite losing, we redirected our efforts toward labor organizing and political education.

Did this election change HKP?

Absolutely. It showed us we are capable of much more. We’re actively involved with labor unions and workers’ rights—like helping revive unions in Quaid-e-Azam Industrial Estate and securing workers’ EOBI and social security funds. Our youth wing, Khalaq Youth Front, connects local youth with university students, fostering class solidarity.

How do you see the future of HKP?

For any revolutionary party, sustainability is key. What makes HKP different is that even after the elections, we’re still active and connected with the people. If we maintain this consistency and continue to grow, I truly believe we can pave the way for a socialist revolution—even if it’s far off. As I often say half-jokingly, “Insha’Allah, revolution!”
